Bare lamp or complete module
The same projector often has two part numbers. A bare lamp is the burner alone and costs less, but it has to be transferred into the existing housing, which means dismantling the old cage and handling a fragile quartz envelope. A lamp module arrives in its housing and drops straight in. For anything maintained by non-specialist staff, or where downtime matters, the module is the sensible order even at the higher price. Ordering the bare lamp by mistake is the most common reason a replacement cannot be fitted on the day it arrives.
Match by projector model, never by wattage
Two lamps of the same wattage are not interchangeable. The housing shape, connector and reflector geometry are specific to the projector, so a 230 W lamp for one model will not seat in another. Work from the projector's full model number, and note that some models were produced in more than one variant. It is also worth confirming the projector actually uses a lamp — laser projectors have no user-replaceable light source, and no lamp exists to buy for them.
Replace on hours, not on failure
Projector lamps dim gradually rather than failing cleanly, and a lamp at half its rated life is visibly duller than a new one — usually noticed as “the projector needs turning up” rather than as a fault. Most projectors report lamp hours in their menu and against a rated figure, extended when run in eco or low-power mode. For rooms in daily use, treating the lamp as a scheduled consumable avoids a dead projector at the start of a lesson or a board meeting.
Fitting
Let the projector cool fully before opening it. Do not touch the glass — oil from skin creates a hot spot and shortens life sharply, so handle by the housing or use a cloth. After fitting, reset the lamp timer in the projector menu; it does not detect the new lamp by itself, and an unreset counter makes the next replacement impossible to plan.
