Backpack, sleeve or case

A backpack carries the weight on both shoulders and is the right answer for anyone who commutes, cycles or walks any distance; it also has room for a charger, a headset and a notebook. A sleeve protects the machine inside another bag and adds almost no bulk — the choice when someone already carries a bag they like. A hard cover clips to the chassis and protects the laptop permanently, including while it is open and in use, which neither of the others does. Buying the wrong one of the three is the usual reason a bag ends up unused in a drawer.

Size is stated as a maximum, and it is a real limit

Cases are sized by the largest screen they take — 13.3-inch, 14-inch, 15.6-inch, 16-inch, 17.3-inch. A 15.6-inch laptop will not go into a 14-inch sleeve, and a 13-inch machine in a 17-inch bag moves around in transit, which is its own risk. Note too that screen size and body size have drifted apart: modern thin-bezel laptops are physically smaller than older machines of the same nominal size, so check the compartment dimensions for anything unusual rather than trusting the inch figure alone.

Fleet buying

Brand-matched cases exist for Dell, Lenovo and HP machines and are the tidy option when you are issuing a standard build. Universal cases from Targus and others fit any make and are the more practical choice for a mixed estate, or when the next refresh may not be the same brand.
