A replacement cartridge and an extended-runtime pack are different purchases

A replacement battery cartridge — APC's RBC range, Eaton's EB and EBP parts — restores a UPS whose original cells have aged out. It returns the unit to its designed runtime and nothing more. An external battery pack (APC XBP, Eaton EBM, PowerWalker BP) is added alongside a healthy UPS to extend how long it can hold the load. They are not interchangeable, and a UPS that is failing its self-test needs the first, not the second.

Match the cartridge, not the UPS model

One UPS model can ship with different cartridges across its production life, and one cartridge often fits several UPS models. The reliable identifier is the number printed on the existing battery or shown in the UPS display — RBC7, RBC17, APCRBC164 and so on — rather than the name on the front of the chassis. Ordering by UPS model alone is the usual cause of a battery that physically fits but presents the wrong voltage string.

Voltage strings have to match exactly

Larger UPS systems run their batteries in series, which is why this range includes 48 V, 72 V, 96 V, 180 V, 192 V and 240 V assemblies alongside single 12 V blocks. The assembly voltage is fixed by the UPS, not chosen. A 192 V pack will not serve a 240 V unit even where the connector appears compatible.

VRLA or lithium-ion

Most batteries here are VRLA (valve-regulated lead-acid, also sold as sealed lead-acid), typically 12 V at 7 Ah or 9 Ah. They are the established choice and the cheaper one per unit. Lithium-ion packs — APC's Smart-UPS Ultra and Eaton's 9PX Li-Ion range — are lighter, tolerate higher ambient temperatures and last substantially longer before replacement, at a higher purchase price. For a rack that is hard to reach or a comms room that runs warm, the longer service interval is usually what decides it.

Ambient temperature sets the real lifespan

VRLA cells are rated at 20-25°C. Sustained operation above that shortens service life sharply, which is why batteries in an unventilated cupboard fail years before the same part in a cooled rack. If a UPS is getting through cells faster than expected, the room is the more likely cause than the battery.
