A printhead is a consumable, not a spare

On a thermal label printer the head is in contact with the media on every label, and it wears. Manufacturers rate them in print length rather than years, so a machine running continuously will need a head well before one printing a few labels a day. The symptoms are consistent and worth recognising early: a fine white line running down every label in the same place means burnt-out elements, and no amount of cleaning or darkness adjustment will bring them back. Plan the replacement as maintenance rather than waiting for a failure mid-shift.

Match the resolution as well as the printer

Heads are made in different densities — commonly 203 dpi, 300 dpi and 600 dpi — and a printer model is often sold in more than one. Fitting a head of the wrong density is a genuine mistake rather than an upgrade: label templates and barcode sizes are calculated against the printer's stated resolution, so codes come out the wrong physical size and may fail verification. Order against the printer's part number, not its family name.

What shortens a printhead's life

Abrasive or unsuitable media is the usual culprit, followed by running thermal transfer stock with no ribbon, which lets the head drag directly on the label face. Excessive darkness settings, grit and adhesive residue all take their toll. Cleaning on every ribbon or roll change with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free swab costs minutes and is the single most effective thing that extends head life.

Inkjet heads differ by design

Some inkjet printers build the head into the cartridge, so it is replaced with every consumable. Others — large-format machines in particular — use a separate user-replaceable head that outlasts many cartridges but eventually needs changing. A third group has a permanent head that is not a user part at all. Check which design the machine uses before ordering.
