The switch has to accept the module, and many will not accept just any
Every transceiver carries an identity in its EEPROM, and switch firmware reads it. A switch may refuse to bring up a port with an unbranded module, log it as unsupported, or accept it only after a command is set. This is the most common reason a correctly specified module does not work. Buy either the switch vendor's own part or a coded compatible module programmed for that platform — which is why third-party part numbers quote the original code they replace. Coding is platform-specific: a module coded for one vendor will not necessarily work in another's switch.
Wavelength and fibre type have to match at both ends
SR optics run at 850 nm over multi-mode fibre and cover a few hundred metres. LR optics run at 1310 nm over single-mode and cover kilometres. Module, fibre and far-end module must all agree — an SR module will not light a single-mode link, and SR paired with LR will not work whatever the patch lead. Decide the fibre and the optics together.
Form factor sets the ceiling, not the floor
A slot runs at its own rate or below: a 1G SFP generally works in an SFP+ port, while a 10G module will not run in a 1G slot. QSFP carries four lanes, which is what lets a 40G port break out into four 10G links. Check what the switch supports per port rather than assuming the speed on the chassis.
Bi-directional and copper modules
BiDi modules send and receive on different wavelengths over one strand, halving the fibre needed. They are bought as matched pairs — 1270 nm at one end, 1330 nm at the other — and two of the same end will not link. Copper SFP modules present an RJ45 port for short runs; 10G copper draws noticeably more power and runs hot, so check the switch's budget before filling a chassis with them.
