Direct thermal or thermal transfer decides whether you also buy ribbon

Direct thermal labels darken under the printhead and need no ribbon, which makes them the cheaper consumable and the usual choice for shipping labels, picking lists and anything read within a few months. They fade with heat, sunlight and abrasion, so they are a poor choice for anything that has to stay legible for years. Thermal transfer labels are printed through a ribbon and last: this is what asset tags, rating plates and archive labelling need. Manufacturers usually encode it in the part name — Zebra's ranges ending D are direct thermal, those ending T are thermal transfer — and a transfer label will come out blank in a direct thermal printer.

Material and adhesive decide how long the label survives

Paper stock suits cartons, shelves and anything short-lived. Polyester and polypropylene stock resists moisture, solvents and abrasion, which is what asset tagging, laboratory and outdoor labelling need. Adhesive matters as much: permanent adhesive is right for assets you never want the label to leave, removable for temporary marking and for anything applied to a surface that must come away clean. Freezer-grade adhesives exist for cold chain use, where a standard permanent adhesive lets go.

The roll has to fit the printer, not just the label

Check three things before ordering: label width, core diameter — typically 25 mm on desktop printers and 76 mm on industrial ones — and maximum roll diameter, which is what actually limits how many labels fit in a desktop machine. Whether the roll is wound face in or face out matters too. A roll that is correct on every dimension but wound the wrong way will print on the liner.

Wristbands, cable markers and pre-printed forms
