USB-C, Thunderbolt or DisplayLink

A USB-C dock uses DisplayPort Alt Mode and is the economical choice, typically driving one or two displays; the exact limit depends on the laptop's own graphics as much as the dock. Thunderbolt docks carry far more bandwidth and reliably drive dual 4K at 60 Hz or more, but the laptop must have a Thunderbolt port — a Thunderbolt dock on a plain USB-C machine will work in a reduced mode rather than as advertised. DisplayLink docks compress video in software, which makes them the universal option: they work across Windows, macOS and a mixed estate regardless of Alt Mode support, at the cost of a driver install and some CPU load.

Charging is the specification people get wrong

A dock that supplies 65 W will not keep a 100 W workstation laptop charged under load — the battery drains slowly through the working day and the user concludes the dock is faulty. Check the laptop's own charger wattage and match or exceed it. This is the single most common cause of complaints about docks.

Count the displays properly

Dual 4K at 60 Hz is a meaningfully different specification from dual 4K at 30 Hz, and 30 Hz is visibly unpleasant for desk work. Check the refresh rate alongside the resolution, and confirm the output connectors — HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C — match the monitors you already own before ordering adapters to bridge the gap.

Universal or brand-matched

Brand-matched docks from Dell, Lenovo and HP integrate best with their own machines, including firmware management and wake-on-dock behaviour. Universal docks from Kensington, StarTech.com and others are the sensible answer for a mixed estate or where the next refresh may be a different brand — and for hot-desking, where whatever laptop arrives has to work.
